The Characteristics and Application Fields of Worm and Worm Gear Reducers

When inspecting and maintaining a speed reducer, there are many critical details to pay attention to in order to ensure its proper operation and extend its service life. First and foremost, it is essential to emphasize that different types of lubricating oils must not be mixed, as this can affect the performance of the speed reducer or even cause damage. The positions of the oil level plug, drain plug, and breather are not fixed but are determined by the specific installation position. To accurately determine their positions, refer to the speed reducer’s installation position diagram.

Checking the Oil Level

Before checking the oil level, be sure to cut off the power to prevent electrical accidents. Also, wait for the speed reducer to cool down completely. Once it has cooled, remove the oil level plug and check if the oil is filled. After the inspection, reinstall the oil level plug.

Inspecting the Oil

Similarly, before inspecting the oil, cut off the power and wait for the speed reducer to cool down. Then, open the drain plug and take an oil sample for testing. Pay particular attention to the oil’s viscosity index. If the oil appears significantly cloudy, it usually indicates that the oil has deteriorated, and it is recommended to replace it as soon as possible. For speed reducers equipped with an oil level plug, also check if the oil level meets the standard. After the inspection, remember to reinstall the oil level plug.

Changing the Oil

Since the viscosity of the oil increases after cooling, making it difficult to drain, the oil change should be performed while the speed reducer is at operating temperature. During the oil change process, first cut off the power and wait for the speed reducer to cool to a non-flammable temperature. However, note that the speed reducer should still retain some warmth during the oil change. Place an oil pan under the drain plug, then sequentially open the oil level plug, breather, and drain plug to drain all the old oil. Once the old oil has been drained, reinstall the drain plug and add new oil of the same grade. If a different grade of oil needs to be used, consult the relevant service department. The amount of oil added should be consistent with the speed reducer’s installation position requirements. Finally, check the oil level at the oil level plug to ensure it is normal. Once confirmed, tighten the oil level plug and breather.
